As you may know, I've been trying to get some interest generated in my new website. It has been a PAIN IN THE BUTT. I've been reading the information that's out there, posting as frequently as possible (which may not really be that much since I've been SWAMPED WITH WORK), looking to the scriptures for signs, and honestly, nothing has worked so far. It's annoying.
I've been thinking about getting help from a site that specializes in link building. If you don't know what that is, it all has to do with a really complicated thing called SEO -- "search engine optimization". The best way I can explain it without going into really weird and obscure terms is like this: let's say you're throwing a party this weekend, and you want it to be a HUGE party. How do you get people to show up? You have to spread the word. How do you spread the word? You have to make sure you get a lot of people, and at least a few with a good reputation to spread the word. That's SEO, in essence: instead of it being a party though, imagine the party is your website.
If you're trying to start a business online or open some kind of company, SEO is going to be extremely important to you -- the more links and the more higher quality links you have to your site, the higher your company will show up on search result pages. I don't know about you, but I generally do NOT look at pages that are, you know, on the LAST page of my results. After all, the order of search results is based on relevance!
Also, if you're trying to do paid posting online, you'll want to take advantage of SEO systems that specialize in link building, since the quality of your opportunities to write is based partially on your inbound links.
Basically, if you're trying to make money online, it's important to think about link building and how it can influence your potential audience.

...when you don't have it, that is. Especially when it comes to an investment like college.
I don't like quoting figures because I feel like I'm "showing off", or something, but my university costs 35,000 a year to attend -- and that does not factor in the cost of books or living expenses. Sure, it's not the most expensive one on the map (definitely not), but I don't know about you...I don't have that kind of money just laying around. My parents don't, either. I got a scholarship from my university (in fact, two of them), and it still wasn't enough. And I was one of the lucky ones in comparison to a lot of the kids in my school. A lot of my friends didn't get scholarships from their respective colleges at all.
Like I wrote about earlier today, it's really amazing what groups will give money to students in the form of a college scholarship. I personally missed out on one that I didn't know about until it was too late, and it was right up my alley -- Maryland students interested in teaching world language. Two thousand a year, and I missed it because I didn't know about it until after its deadline.
The important thing is that you have to check around for these things. I got lucky; my high school really pushed its students to apply for scholarships (I think mostly because a lot of the kids didn't get money directly from the school -- I can think of...five that did. And that's it), but still, it's not everything. Look around online -- there are plenty of sites that can help you find a college scholarship if you need one. There are even organizations that will give you money if you have a certain last name! Look around, especially online -- there are some groups that really don't have much presence EXCEPT for online, and they still want to give money to people.
I don't know about you, but if someone's willing to give me money for...filling out a form, or writing an essay, and it means that I won't have to worry about a loan, or selling possessions of mine, I'll do it. It's the best thing I know I can do for myself.

Jon's helping me with this. I personally am petrified of Halloween movies, but I think I'll go see one just so Jon will stop calling me a "wussy". It's like his favorite word to describe me.
So, about scary movies. I've seen a few, and most of them just creeped me out -- so, I guess the producers are doing their jobs. I think the scariest movie I've ever heard of or seen has definitely been "Saw". When I was in 12th grade, we were given a rather open-ended English project, and one of my friends did a game based on the movie Saw -- with the creepy clown mask. Clowns freak me out, first off, and the idea of being locked up in a closed space creeps me out, so you can guess that being locked into a classroom with a bunch of idiots (no, really: he locked us in. And the kids in our class were idiots) was actually a bit unnerving. Oh, and the scene where the key to the door was underneath a bunch of needles...*shudder*
Jon's trying to freak me out AS I type this. Yuck.
Only a nutcase would think of something that demented. We're sitting here looking up movies, and we found Halloween the movie...another movie involving a nutcase (I say that in the nicest way possible -- but yes, Michael Meyers has gotten out of a mental institution in the film, based on the synopsis). I did some reading on Rob Zombie so I could give a legitimate response (I've heard some of his music, and I liked it; Jon says flat out that "[I] should listen to more of his music because...he's kind of awesome, yeah."). I like older movies, they focused more on a story itself rather than depending on special effects. Zombie's apparently a fan of 30s and 40s horror films, so I may go see this just to see if the film has a more...how do I say, "classic" feel to it, instead of a lot of movies now that focus so much on just...effects. Substance over style, people. Always.
Oh, and here's the trailer for Halloween the movie:
My big question regarding the trailer is this: is he going after his sister to kill her, or what? I want to know. I mean, it makes sense that he would want to be near her since she survived, and whatnot...but, I want to know if he's crazy enough to kill her (since he's nuts).
What about you guys? Comments!
If there's one thing I am (and you can tell by any of my blogs), it's frugal: I hate spending more money than I have to, even if someone's treating me to something (I've told Jon more than once while we've been out on dates that I thought he was spending too much on me). Especially with the cost of books for school looming over my head, I've been trying to find ways to save little by little every month.
I found some Linens-N-Things coupons today that might be a really big help. My bed at home is a full-sized one -- the one at the university is only a twin, but you have to buy "extra long" sheets. I had never even heard of "twin extra long" until about a month ago when I went to freshman orientation. On top of that, since there's three of us in the house (not counting my parents), sheets kind of get spread around, so I would love to be able to have new things when I leave that are mine instead of feeling like I'm taking from the other two.
KeepCash has a lot of different coupon codes that I would use: Barnes & Noble (since the university's bookstore is a B & N), Geeks.com (since I know I'm going to need new computer stuff while I'm away), and even the Discovery Store (not because I need anything from there, but...because their stuff is just so neat). And now that I can actually purchase things online (I love being 18 sometimes), finding stuff like this is pretty great. Check it out. :)

Even though I'm really happy to be moving away and having a little place that I can think of as more of my own, a part of me is going to miss the comforts of home...mostly, just knowing everyone, and I think a lot of people underestimate that. I already know that I'm going to be making a lot of phone calls home.
But, if you know what's happening in my life, "home" may be in two different places now. And, with the prospect of studying abroad being a legitimate option, "home" may be in an entirely different country than I am...thousands of miles away. Obviously, since I'm a student, I won't have that much money...so cheap international calls are going to be important to me, since I truly have my heart set on going to Italy in January...and Dad truly has his heart set on going back to Puerto Rico, possibly with both of my sisters. The rates aren't bad, either: heck, it costs me more to make a phone call in the U.S. from the U.S. NOW that it would for me to call from Italy to the U.S. using Poingo's calling cards.

A lot of people think that I absolutely hate shopping, and sometimes that's true. I'm not a big fan of shopping for clothes and whatnot, mostly because it's simply very stressful to do those things with my Mom (that woman can turn anything into a comment relating to your weight), but I do in fact enjoy shopping at some places. I'm a big fan of anything organizational: calendars, highlighters, notebooks...I don't know why. So, believe it or not, Staples is one of my favorite stores (and I'm really excited since it looks like I'll be able to go out and buy stuff from there for school).
Another thing I can't understand: I hate going out to public places. I just get really nervous...so, I do a lot of my shopping online if at all possible. There are a few coupons from Couponchief.com that I just found today: free shipping for orders over 50 dollars (which I may legitimately wind up getting -- I need a lot of stuff), and of course, clearance items...which I may wind up getting just for the heck of it since they're so cheap (have you ever done that? It'll make me feel better if you say yes).
What truly surprises me is the fact that there are so many online shopping coupons out there. I've gotten a couple from other places in my email before, and frankly, they tend to be better priced than when I go into the store itself! I guess that's because sometimes the prices of things varies from state to state, and online there are no state borders to worry about. I don't necessarily care; as long it's not clothes or anything I need to try on, if I can get cheaper online, I'll do it.
That reminds me. I need to buy clothes soon. ugh.

I know that many of you have seen ads on blogs before, but I only started doing it recently. I signed up for a few sites, but PayPerPost FINALLY accepted my blog. I'm so ridiculously excited about it, it's not even funny. First off, the company is in my country, which is a really great option. If you've seen my rants on the site, you know how I feel about anything pertaining to money being handled internationally, so that saves me a lot of grief. Their site is very informative, and there are plenty of opportunities available, which gets me really excited.
I intend on using the money I earn from the site for school. I just got my first semester's bill, and even though it's significantly less than what others are paying, it's still a lot of money to me. Especially since on the same day, I got a letter saying that my $15,000 dollar scholarship had been canceled. Thankfully, all they need is two pieces of paperwork to reinstate my money, but seeing that in print was very scary. I'm going to be away from home for the first time in my life, and money, while not everything, is helpful. Period.
I'm just happy because this is going to be SO HELPFUL to me. I feel like I'm doing something for myself and I can see the result directly.
